About Variance Films
A long story but basically, we're here to help.
In 2008, Variance Films was founded as a filmmaker-centric distributor specializing in DIWO (Doing It With Others) theatrical releasing. Our mission was, and still is, simple: to bring our expertise to the table and collaborate with filmmakers, distributors, and rights holders to provide a bespoke, top-class theatrical release regardless of a film’s size, budget, or windowing.
Variance handles all the traditional aspects of theatrical distribution, including release strategy and positioning, theater booking, collections, and exhibitor relations. With strong relationships we've built with both the major chains and the best independent arthouses, we can handle any size release, from 5 to 500 screens.
But we're far more than a booking service. Our specialization in theatrical marketing allows us to devise and execute the entire release campaign, including trailer/key art creative direction, PR strategy and management, outreach and grassroots marketing, advertising, social/digital market, awards strategy, and street/events work.
How we do this is flexible. Sometimes we work with distributors or streaming platforms as their "in-house" theatrical team, sometimes with experienced filmmakers who want to cut out the middleman, and sometimes we've been known to work with first-time filmmakers on a reduced or no-fee basis.
We can collaborate as part of a big team or work with an individual filmmaker, we can handle the entire release from start to finish or just take care of a few tricky parts, we can be the official distributor or we can simply consult. Every release is a little bit different.
From the beginning, we've operated under a strong code of ethics: hard work, rigorous honesty, financial transparency, and the fact that we won't take on a film we don't love regardless of the financials.
This has attracted a phenomenal slate of filmmakers ranging from veterans like Spike Lee and John Sayles to groundbreaking newcomers like Terence Nance, Eliza Hittman, and Damien Chazelle, all of whose debut features were released by Variance.
About the Team
It's not quite our first rodeo.
Variance principals Dylan Marchetti and Kristen Osborne have worked together for 13 years, as well as at solo jaunts at AMC Theatres, THINKFilm and IFP. To date, the films they’ve led theatrical releases on have grossed over $36,000,000 at the box office.
In 2014, Variance merged with GoDigital for two years to create Amplify, an all-rights distribution company, where Dylan and Kristen took the lead in acquiring and releasing acclaimed titles like Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter and God Help the Girl, and in 2016, Dylan and Kristen joined the team at Well Go USA, where they led the theatrical and marketing teams on over fifty theatrical releases including Burning, The Endless, Train to Busan, and The Wailing.
In 2019, Dylan and Kristen relaunched Variance with its filmmaker-centric mission intact, and an eye on ensuring a diverse slate of independent films from an empowered group of filmmakers and distributors get the theatrical release they deserve.
We love streaming, we love Blu-ray, and we love VOD, but as we love going to the theater just a little bit more, Variance’s sole focus is theatrical distribution and marketing.
